Soldier killed, 4 others wounded in NPA ambush in Sorsogon town
Authorities identified the slain soldier as Corporal Jayson Gabao
The five soldiers were conducting combat patrol operations when they were attacked
LEGAZPI CITY, Philippines — A soldier was killed while four others were wounded in an ambush staged by suspected members of the New People’s Army (NPA) in Gubat town, Sorsogon province on Tuesday, March 7, 2023.
Lieutenant Colonel Maria Luisa Calubaquib, spokesperson for the Philippine Army’s 9th Infantry Division, identified the slain soldier as Corporal Jayson Gabao, a member of the 22nd Infantry Battalion.
Calubaquib said the five soldiers were conducting combat patrol operations in Barangay Ariman when they were attacked by around 20 NPA rebels at around 1:30 p.m.
The wounded soldiers were rushed to the Gubat District Hospital for treatment.
Calubaquib said the NPA rebels fled the scene after the ambush.
The military is conducting pursuit operations against the NPA rebels.
The NPA is the armed wing of the Communist Party of the Philippines, which has been waging a decades-long armed struggle against the government.
Peace talks between the government and the NPA have been stalled since 2017.
