Douglas Ross to stand in general election

Scottish Conservative leader Douglas Ross has announced he will resign as leader of the party.

Ross said it was not feasible for him to continue in three roles - as MSP, MP and party leader.

He will remain as an MSP and MP, and will continue to lead the Scottish Conservatives until a new leader is elected.

Ross said he had made the decision after "careful consideration".

"It has been an honour to lead the Scottish Conservatives, and I am proud of what we have achieved together," he said.

"However, I believe that the time is right for someone else to take the party forward."

Ross said he would now focus on his constituency work and on holding the SNP government to account.

"I will continue to be a strong voice for Scotland and for Scottish Conservatives," he said.

The Scottish Conservative party will now begin the process of electing a new leader.
