Australia's Indigenous Culture: A Rich Tapestry of Diversity
Unique Heritage
Australia's Indigenous peoples comprise two distinct cultural groups: Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander. These communities have maintained deep connections to their culture, language, and traditional lands throughout history.
Population and Identity
In the 2021 Census, 812,728 people identified as being of Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander origin. Despite the disruptions caused by colonization, Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples have preserved their distinct identities, histories, and cultural traditions.
